The primary responsibility of the essay instructor will be to guide students through the process of developing and completing a high school level 5-8 paragraph essay. In addition, the writing instructor is expected to present an introduction to the Education Unlimited essay writing curriculum in lectures (which he or she will deliver jointly with fellow essay instructor). Incumbent will also attend all staff meetings (including the meeting held the day before camp begins), and to assist the camp director on the first day of camp while the students arrive on campus.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

It is expected that the applicant will have taught writing, composition, or some related subject. Ideally, the applicant will have had experience teaching high-school age students, but this is not required. The position does require that the applicant be comfortable meeting on a one-on-one basis with students, and that the applicant feels genuine enthusiasm at the prospect of guiding young people to produce a personal essay.

DETAILS OF POSITON
< P >
Prior to camp, the instructor will receive materials that describe the essay writing curriculum. These materials provide a day-to-day schedule of the essay writing program, as well as a detailed outline of the two lectures that the instructor (along with his or her fellow essay-writing instructors) will deliver.

On the first day of camp, the instructor will (accompanied by fellow essay writing instructors) deliver an introductory lecture. The purpose of the lecture is to give the students an overview of the elements of successful personal essays, and to discuss the structure of the camp’s writing program.

Over the next six days, the essay instructor will work, in groups of 10-12 and possibly on a one-on-one basis, with his or her students. Over the course of the six days of class instruction there will be block rotations every day and the essay instructor will be assigned approximately 10-12 students per block rotation. Following the Education Unlimited curriculum guidelines, the instructor will teach and provide guidance as the students write and rewrite their essay during the eight-day program. The instructor is expected to alert the camp director or lead instructor if any student is having difficulty keeping to the completion timeline for the essay.

Finally, the essay instructor is expected to guide each of his or her students to the successful completion of an essay.

PERCENT OF TIME -- KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION

70% Work with and supervise students in the essay writing process. Take part in non-academic recreation and supervision duties.

10% Deliver Writing Lectures.
< P >
5% Supervise Writing Workshops
< P >
10% Attend pre-camp meeting, mid-camp meeting, and assist director in greeting arriving students at check-in.

5% Review curricular materials; coordinate teaching with fellow essay writing instructors.

COMPENSATION
< P >
This position requires roughly a 9-day commitment, including arrival on campus on the afternoon prior to the first day of camp. Compensation for this position starts at $1065. Instructors will be paid as an independent contractor. Room and board provided.

An additional stipend of $150 for supervision is optional. These duties include living in the dorms alongside the campers, being “on-duty” 2/3 of the nights of camp, performing floor and bed checks, “hanging out” with the campers after scheduled classes and assisting the director with “structured activities.”

It is our preference that all of our staff choose the above-mentioned living arrangements, however, we recognize the need for other accommodations.

There are three possible living arrangements available to EU faculty. Please choose one and note it on your employment application:

I. Full Supervision: (as mentioned above) Includes all meals, a parking permit if needed, and the additional stipend of $150.

II. Commuter: (Faculty member lives at home and commutes to camp for daily classes.) Includes cafeteria lunch OR dinner and parking permit.

III. Half Supervision: Includes all meals and a parking permit if needed. Staff member is NOT expected to perform nightly supervision duties, however, while living in the dorms alongside campers they may be called upon at times to help out should there be a crisis and are expected to assist in upholding the camp’s general rules.
