The Assistant Science Instructor is responsible for assisting a lead instructor in an Astronomy, Marine Science or Robotics lab at the Sally Ride Science Camp by Education Unlimited. The Assistant Science Instructor will support a lead instructor in managing a lab class of up to 20 girls, with the help of camp counselors. The Assistant Instructor is expected to help the Camp Director and other staff in the execution of a successful, safe, and fun series of camps. Responsibilities include preparing for daily labs, teaching the Sally Ride Science Camp curriculum, maintaining a safe working environment for campers grades 6-9, supervising campers both in and out of the classroom, and assisting the camp director with a small number of administrative tasks. < P > NATURE OF POSITION < P > The Assistant Science Instructor should have an academic background in science, experience working with middle school students, and basic knowledge of lab techniques. We are seeking instructors that can be positive and inspiring role models for the girls who attend the program. Instructors will specialize in either Astronomy or Marine Science or Robotics. < P > The primary responsibility for the contractor will be to assist the Lead Instructor in implementing the Science curriculum at the Camp. This will include demonstrating lab techniques, assisting and encouraging girls in their lab, and organizing and coordinating lab projects. However, this position includes some responsibilities prior to the beginning of the camp, and some general supervision while at the camp. < P > Before camp actually begins, the contractor should review the existing curriculum and plan with the Lead Instructor for daily activities. The Instructor must arrive on campus at least one day early for some basic training and an all-hands staff meeting. Contractor should also expect to assist in the set up of camp including, but not limited to, check-in duties and supervising/leading icebreaker activities. In addition, the Instructor will be expected to participate in a full day finale culminating the camp experience. < P > Instructor will be required to attend a curriculum training session about one week prior to the start of camp. < P > Most teaching will be done in morning lab sessions from approximately 8:30am – 1:00pm. Instructor is expected to be on campus during those times each day and to be available the afternoon and evening of the first and last day of camp. < P > Finally, the contractor is required to provide written evaluations of the camp and camp director and supporting staff, to be turned in on the last day of camp. < P > PERCENT OF TIME KEY -- RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION < P > 70% -- Instruction and classroom supervision. < P > 10% -- Supervision and other administrative responsibilities. < P > 20% -- Set up work, primarily curriculum review and training. < P > COMPENSATION < P > This position requires roughly an 8-day commitment, including arrival on campus on the afternoon prior to the first day of camp. Except for the first day of the program, Contractor’s hours will be between 8:00am and 1:00pm daily. Compensation for this position starts at $500.00 dollars. Instructors will be paid as an independent contractor. Lunch will be provided each day at a campus cafeteria.
